Newcastle will receive a record transfer fee if Bruno Guimaraes decides to leave after penning a new long term contract.

The Brazilian midfielder has extended his stay at St James' Park to 2028 after signing a new five-year deal, which reportedly includes a £100million release clause. Should the clause be activated, Guimaraes would become the sixth Premier League star to move for a nine-figure fee, following in the footsteps of Philippe Coutinho, Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez, Declan Rice and Jack Grealish.

The departure, should it happen, would also be Newcastle's highest-ever sale. It would absolutely obliterate the £35m they raked in after selling Andy Carroll to Liverpool back in 2011.

There is, however, little indication that Guimaraes would agree to a move away even if the release clause was activated. After extending his deal in the north-east this week, he expressed how happy he was at Newcastle, insisting he'd never felt "so loved" by a fanbase before.

"We are doing so well and when I look around the pitch at my team-mates, I am so proud of them all. I’m proud of everyone; the team, the staff, the owners and the fans," the 25-year-old said. "The city believes again and it’s unbelievable what we have done for the team. I hope that this can continue. It’s amazing what has happened in my life in the last two years. The fans have made me feel at home since my first day here and I feel so loved in my life."

Real Madrid made an approach for Guimaraes back in 2022, and although the player admitted there were "doubts" over his future prior to agreeing his new contract, he insisted he has nothing but Newcastle on his mind. For now at least.

"I’m so happy here," he continued. "It’s a place that is so comfortable to be and I hope to keep making the supporters happy and helping the team do well. That’s my goal, because there are no words to describe how happy I am to be here."

Eddie Howe, who signed Guimaraes from Lyon in January 2022, said he "epitomises" the recent success Newcastle have had. "He’s put in so many good displays, he’s very consistent and he’s got a great personality off the pitch as well," the head coach added.

"He cares very deeply about Newcastle United and the success of the club and he’s got a great relationship with our supporters. He’s been a key signing for us – definitely the type of signing that we want to make."
