Michael Van Gerwen previews World Darts Championship

Day four of the World Darts Championship has come and gone, with number-five ranked Gerwyn Price among those to seal victories on the Alexandra Palace stage on Monday night. Tuesday promises another hearty dose of high-octane action as James Wade and Michael van Gerwen prepare to get their tournaments underway.

Following the reduced schedule to kick off the week, fans will once again be treated to afternoon and evening sessions in London as the next crop of hopefuls attempt to manufacture a deep run in darts’ showpiece event.

There have been no major shocks as yet with Luke Humphries, Price, Michael Smith and Gary Anderson all coming through their opening matches unscathed.

Star threatens tournament boycott

Ricardo Pietreczko has suggested that he would be prepared to boycott the World Darts Championship if he receives a hostile reception from the crowd before his match with female competitor Mikuru Suzuki on Tuesday night.

Pietreczko, 29, was booed by some fans during a recent match with Beau Greaves at the Grand Slam of Darts.

“If they don’t want to see me, then I don’t understand why I have to accept such disrespectful things,” he said. “It is absurd. I just want to be myself again.”

MVG kicks rival while he’s down

Three-time world champion Michael van Gerwen has pulled no punches while discussing Germany’s top darts prospects.

Gabriel Clemens was among those in the firing line after suffering an 11-6 defeat to Van Gerwen in the Players Championship last month.

“If he was a top player, he would be playing in the Premier League,” the Dutchman told Sport1. “Or he would have won big tournaments.”

Fellow German Martin Schindler came off even worse, with Van Gerwen adding: “Schindler is obviously a good player, but he doesn’t have the balls that Gabriel Clemens has. There is something missing.”
